March 28, 2008
MILWAUKEE -
The Marquette women's basketball team will be looking to punch its ticket to the final four of the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the second time in as many appearances in the tournament when the Golden Eagles play at Kentucky in the WNIT Quarterfinals on Sunday, March 30. Tip-off at Memorial Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. ET. The game can be heard live over the radio airwaves on Relevant Radio 100.1 FM with Kent Summerfeld calling the action. Live stats and live audio/video will be available on Kentucky's athletics website: www.ukathletics.com. The video/audio stream is available on a pay-per-use basis. The Golden Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Illinois, 72-64, Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center. Junior Krystal Ellis led the way with 25 points, while freshmen Angel Robinson and Jocelyn Mellen added 16 and 10 points apiece, respectively. After being down 36-31 at half time, Marquette mounted a 15-0 run to start the second half and never looked back outscoring the Illini, 41-28, in the second frame. In WNIT games, Robinson has been the Golden Eagles' leading scoring with 17.5 ppg. With her 16 points against Illinois, the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection matched MU's freshman single season scoring record (353 points). Mellen and senior Svetlana Kovalenko have been dominant on the glass averaging 9.5 and 7.0 rpg, respectively. The Wildcats endured a season similar to Marquette's as they overcame injury, defeated a couple of ranked foes and neither won nor lost more than three consecutive games all season. Much like MU, UK's second round game of the WNIT also went to overtime. Kentucky defeated Middle Tennessee State in overtime, 68-66, in the first round and then overcame a six-point second half deficit to win the game. The Wildcats' leading scorer, Samantha Mahoney scored 30 points in the win. The Wildcats are led by a pair in double figures as Samantha Mahoney averages a team-high 13.5 ppg, while Sarah Elliot follows with 10.5 ppg. In WNIT play, Mahoney has contributed 20.0 ppg. On the glass, Victoria Dunlap is averaging 6.8 rpg overall, 13.0 rpg in WNIT games. Kentucky is 10-7 at Memorial Coliseum this season, while Marquette 4-9 on its opponents home floor. Marquette fans are welcome to go to a pre-game reception starting at Noon at Two Keys Tavern (333 S. Limestone) in Lexington. Food and a cash bar will be available.
