MILWAUKEE - Senior women's soccer player Laura Boyer and men's basketball player Ousmane Barro were named the 2008 Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Outstanding Athletes Friday evening at the Senior Athletics Awards banquet held at Marquette's Alumni Memorial Union.

Boyer complied a 41-14-10 record over three seasons at Marquette and completed her career ranking near the top of every goalkeeping statistical category. While helping the Golden Eagles to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006 and a first-ever berth in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, Boyer finished first all-time in career goals against average (0.82), second all-time in save percentage (81.5), career victories (41), career shutouts (23) and minutes played (6050:46). She also holds the single season saves record with 112 for the 2005 season.

The Overland Park, Kan., native was Marquette's first ever M.A.C. Herman Award candidate in 2006, and was honored by the BIG EAST Conference as a third team All-BIG EAST honoree in 2007 and an all-conference honorable mention selection in 2005. For her work in the classroom she was honored with CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team accolades in 2007 and was two-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five selection in 2006 and 2007.

Ousmane Barro


Barro helped the Golden Eagles to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances including a second round berth in 2008. He made his mark in the Marquette record books as the all-time leader in career games played (127), second all-time in field goal percentage (58.1) and seventh all-time in blocked shots (100). Barro finished his career averaging 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

In other awards handed out Friday evening, cross-country runner Cody Miles and track & field standout Lana Rabas earned the Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year award, and golfer Chris Streff and Kim Todd of the volleyball team were honored with the Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Leadership and Service Award.

Taking home the Cura Personalis Award, voted by the student-athletes, was men's tennis player of Greg Sirotek.

Ralph H. Metcalfe

Ralph H. Metcalfe was known as the world's fastest human from 1932 through 1934. Was the NCAA champion in the 100- and 200-yard events in 1932-34. He broke or tied every world record from 40 to 220 yards. For five consecutive years (1932-36), he captured the AAU 200-meter title. He also added the Central Collegiate Conference 100 and 220-yard crowns and the Drake Relays 100-yard honors in each of his three varsity seasons at Marquette. At one point in his college career, he had equaled or bettered 13 world¹s records. Served as captain of the Marquette track team in 1934. He placed second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 meters in the 1932 Olympics, and came back in the 1936 Olympics to finish second in the 100 meters and help the U.S. win the 400-meter relay.

After his college career, he joined the armed forces and served in World War II. After he got out of the army, he would go on to a life of public service and was a congressman for the state of Illinois. He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. He was inducted in the M Club Hall of Fame in 1972.
