Marquette Takes Fifth at BIG EAST Tournament

April 4, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will welcome BIG EAST Conference foes Cincinnati and Seton Hall this weekend to Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Doubles action will begin Friday at 4 p.m. against the Bearcats, and continue against the Pirates at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Saturday is senior day. The Golden Eagles along with head coach Jody Bronson and assistant coach Heather Nobler will honor senior Erin Watkins, Beba Calbeto and Shannon Brown for their hard work and commitment to the program over their careers.

Marquette (9-11, 4-1 BIG EAST) enters its final weekend at home winning its last two matches over Connecticut and Providence 6-1 and 7-0, respectively. The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 93-5 in the match and lost only two sets overall against the Huskies. MU went undefeated in doubles action and three Golden Eagles, Watkins, along with freshmen Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz, each posted two singles wins in Storrs.

Cincinnati (5-12, 1-6) has rebounded from a stretch of six straight losses between January and February to win two of its last six. The Bearcats have no singles player above .500 , and only one doubles pair with a winning record in Valeriya Dandik and Elizabeth Young (4-2). The team's singles side has recorded a 32-70 overall record this season, while the doubles teams are 15-36 overall.

The Pirates (2-9, 2-7) enter the match against the Golden Eagles on a four-match losing streak. Like the Bearcats, SHU lacks winning records on the roster, with just two singles player with an even or winning record. Nadezhda Shein stands 5-5 overall, while Belfin Sunbul is 5-2. On the doubles side, five of the seven teams have not won a match. The duo of Denise Liebschner and Shein leads Seton Hall at the No. 1 doubles spot with an overall 4-6 record.
