Women's Tennis Takes Down Penn State, 4-3

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Marshall University women's tennis team advanced to 5-2 overall with a 4-3 victory over Penn State University on Friday at the Sami Tennis Center. The Nittany Lions fell to 1-3 for the season. The 53rd-ranked Thundering Herd took the all-time series lead over the Nittany Lions, 4-3. "It's good to beat a Big Ten opponent," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. Marshall's No. 15 nationally-ranked junior duo of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) took an 8-7 victory over Jenny Shular/Sarah Lotto at the number one. Playing the second position, Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) defeated Katelyn BeVard/Lauren McCarthy, 8-5. To finish the doubles sweep, Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took the No. 3 mark, 8-3, over Dorothy Dohanics/Lauren Holzberg. Schmitt (19th) remained perfect for the season with a straight-set victory over Jenny Shular, 6-3, 6-1, at the number one. Raich took a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision at the number three mark over Holzberg. Playing at the four, Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated McCarthy, 6-4, 6-3, to take the Herd's final point. Soor fell at the number two, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Lock lost to Dohanics, 7-5, 6-0, at the five spot and Denisa Zobeideh took the sixth mark over Kashelkina, 6-0, 6-3. "We have a tough match tomorrow," coach Mercer added. Marshall will face its fourth-ranked foe of the season on Saturday, Feb. 9 against No. 73 Yale University (1-0) at University Park, Pa. at the Sami Tennis Center with a 12 p.m. start.
