Women's Tennis Improves to a Five-Game Winning Streak on Saturday

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team improved its winning streak to five with a 6-1 decision over Miami (Ohio) University on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club. The 55th-ranked Thundering Herd improved to 9-2 overall while the RedHawks fell to 6-2 for the season. "I am really impressed with Miami because they have improved," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "We responded very well to the challenge." No. 9 Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) advanced to a 9-0 record at the number one position with an 8-3 decision over Brintney Larson and Sydnee Bridger. Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) took an 8-6 advantage over Megan Martzolf and Cara Wald at the number two. Playing the three, Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) defeated Leda Pesatova and Kelly Douple, 8-2, to finish the Herd's doubles sweep. Schmitt (39th) remained the lone singles player perfect so far this season with a straight-set victory against Larson, 6-2, 6-2, at the number one mark. Raich took a straight-set win over Pesatova, 6-3, 7-5, at the number three spot. Schwartz defeated Douple, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5, at the four. Playing the five, Lock took a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory against Wald. Keener won the six spot over Bridger, 7-5, 6-3. Martzolf defeated Soor, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, at the number two to take Miami's lone point. The Herd advanced its all-time series lead over the RedHawks to 14-2. "We are excited for a great match against VCU next weekend," Coach Mercer added. Marshall will play host to the 25th-ranked foe Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday, March 1 with first serve set for 11 a.m. at the Huntington Tennis Club.
