BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team defeated Old Dominion University, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club. The 55th-ranked Thundering Herd squad improved to 10-3 overall while the Lady Monarchs fell to 7-5 so far this season.

With the victory, the Herd narrowed the Lady Monarchs all-time series lead to 4-2.

"We did a good job earning a 6-1 victory over a quality team," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "This was an accomplishment and we played solid tennis."

The No. 16 pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) continued as the Herd's only perfect record at 11-0 so far this season with an 8-2 decision over Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff at the number one.

Playing at the number three position, Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took an 8-4 advantage over Daniela Cohen and Joanna Dobrowolska. Marija Citic and Jana Kubickova defeated Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria), 8-6, at the number two slot in doubles competition.

Schmitt (107th) took a straight-set decision over Haarhoff, 6-0, 6-0, at the number one mark. Soor followed with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory against Dobrowolska at the number three. Lock defeated Kubickova, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at the number five slot. At the six mark, Keener took an 8-2 victory over Citic. After a hard fought match, Raich defeated Cohen, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, at the number four position.

Fahoum defeated Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.), 6-2, 6-3, at the number two position for the Lady Monarch's lone point.

"We look forward to tomorrow's match against Michigan State," Coach Mercer added. "This match against the Spartans will make us work harder."

Marshall will close the two-match weekend with a match against Michigan State University, Saturday, with first serve set for 12 p.m. The match between the Herd and the Spartans will be the first meeting among schools. The Herd holds a 5-5 overall record against Big Ten opponents.
