Women's Tennis Defeats Michigan State, 6-1, Saturday

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team improved to 11-3 overall Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 decision against Michigan State University at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Spartans fell to 7-5 so far this season. The 55th-ranked Thundering Herd took the all-time series lead over the Spartans, 1-0. The Herd stands at 7-5 against Big Ten opponents. "Today's match consisted of good tennis and the 6-1 victory was great for us," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "Michigan State was a very competitive team that was well-coached." The No. 16 pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) defeated Christine Bader and Whitney Wilson, 8-4, at the number one position to continue as the Herd's only perfect record at 12-0 so far this season. With a deficit of 7-4, the Herd's duo of Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) fought back to defeat Stephanie Kebler and Lindsey Lonergan, 9-7, at the number three mark. Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) fell short to Ana Milosavlijevic and Manon Noe, 8-6, at the two spot. Schmitt (107th) improved to 13-1 so far this season with a straight-set victory against Bader, 6-2, 7-5, at the number one position. Soor followed with another straight-set win, 6-4, 6-3, over Kebler at the number three slot. Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) took the victory at the two spot over Noe, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Playing the number four, Raich defeated Lonergan, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Keener finished the Herd's victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) advantage over Wickman at the number six. Milosavlievic defeated Lock, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, at the number five mark for the Spartans' lone point. "Again, this match was a great victory for us," Coach Mercer added. Marshall will travel to Massachusetts to face Harvard University and Boston College, Friday and Saturday, to begin the Herd's seven-match road trip. The Herd will challenge the Crimson, Friday, March 14 at 3:00 p.m. at the Murr Center Courts at the Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. Then Marshall will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face the Eagles at Flynn Recreation Complex and the Weymouth Club. During the five-match road trip, the Herd will face five nationally-ranked opponents. So far this season, Marshall holds a 2-3 record against ranked foes.
