TULSA, Okla. - The Thundering Herd's junior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (55th) upset bid fell short to No. 12-ranked Megan Moulton-Levy from William and Mary, 6-2, 6-0, Thursday morning, in the NCAA Singles Competition Round of 32, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Schmitt's NCAA Singles Second Round appearance was the first in Marshall University women's tennis history. "I felt Kellie was prepared but it didn't work against such a great player," Marshall's Head Coach John Mercer said. "We wish Megan the best of luck." Schmitt ended her 2008 singles season 23-4 with her second consecutive Conference USA Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team honors and as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) East Regional Player-to-Watch. Schmitt also garnered three C-USA Player of the Week awards this spring and earned the 2007 October Player of the Month. In 2007, Schmitt was the first ever NCAA singles participant for the Herd but fell to Stanford's Theresa Logar, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round. "I hope Kellie can rebound to play well later in doubles," Coach Mercer added. Later today, the 28th-ranked doubles team of Schmitt and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) will face the top seeded and No. 7-ranked duo Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang from Duke University, also at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, on the campus of the University of Tulsa. First serve is set for 3 p.m. CT. Today's match will be the first meeting between the two pairs this season. All matches shall be best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games will be used for all matches. For further updates on the 2008 NCAA Championships, visit www.ncaa.com.
