Schmitt Garners Third C-USA Player of the Week Honor of Season

IRVING, TEXAS - The Marshall University's women's tennis team's Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was honored with the Conference USA Player of the Week accolade, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. The weekly honor is the seventh of Schmitt's career and third selection in 2008 (Jan. 22, Jan .29). The Thundering Herd's 107th-ranked singles player went 4-0 in both singles and doubles last week to assist Marshall over Old Dominion and Michigan State, 6-1. "We are proud of what Kellie has done so far this season," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "She had two quality wins last week." Schmitt, with doubles team partner Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) holds the only perfect record for the Herd so far this season at 12-0. Schmitt and Soor (16th) defeated the Monarch's Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff, 8-2, at the number one position. The pair defeated Christine Bader and Whitney Wilson of Michigan State, 8-4. Playing the singles number one mark, Schmitt stands as the lone Herd player with one loss (13-1) so far this season. Against Old Dominion, Schmitt took a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 decision over Haarhoff. Then against the Spartans, Schmitt defeated Bader, 6-2, 7-5. "We hope she continues with the great work she has done so far this season," Coach Mercer added. Schmitt and the No. 55-ranked Marshall (11-3) will travel to Massachusetts to face Harvard University and Boston College, Friday and Saturday. The Herd will challenge the Crimson, Friday, March 14 at 3 p.m. at the Murr Center Courts at the Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. Then Marshall will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face Boston College at the Flynn Recreation Complex and the Weymouth Club, Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m.
