Cowboys drop 11-1 decision to Houston

March 25, 2008

Box Score

McNeese State had its three game winning streak halted here Tuesday by the University of Houston in an 11-1 setback.

The Cougars, now 15-7 overall, blew the game open by scoring four runs in the first inning and they went on to add one in the third and three in both the fifth and the eighth frames.

McNeese, now 6-15, scored a single run in the third inning.

The Cowboys are back in action on Wednesday when they host Grambling.

John Touchton, who hurled the mid four innings for Houston without giving up a hit or a run while striking out five batters, was awarded the pitching victory. That lifted his record to 2-1 on the season. Chris Wright started the game but went only four innings, giving up four hits and one run.

Cowboy starter Jonathan Conrad absorbed the loss, his third against no victories. He hurled five innings, giving up 10 hits and eight runs, all eight of the earned.

The Cowboys lone run scored in the third inning with Josh Cholley following a Bryn Thompson triple with a double. McNeese went on to load the bases in that frame but Taylor Freeman popped up and Nick Eubanks struck out to half the threat.

Shortstop Blake Kelso led Houston with two hits and three RBIs while Ryan Lorman had three hits and two RBIs and Matt Murphy had a hit and two RBIs. Designated hitter Felix Fanaselle belted the game's only home run, that a solo shot in the third.

No Cowboy got more than one hit and joining Cholley and Thompson with a hit were Sam Merrill and Freeman.

Cowboy shortstop Shon Landry had his eight game hitting streak snapped as he went hitless in three at bats.
