Cowboys fall 7-2 in first game to UT Arlington on Friday

Texas-Arlington scored five runs in the first five innings and went on to post a 7-2 Southland Conference baseball victory over McNeese State here Friday night.

The two teams return to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Saturday with righthander Scott Holstein on the mound for the Cowboys.

UTA ran three runs across the plate in the third inning on four hits and one Cowboy error and that was all the Mavericks needed. They added two in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and the ninth.

The Cowboys got single runs in the fourth and seventh frames, one of them coming on Ryan Brauninger's second home run of the season.

The victory sent UTA's league record to 6-7 and left McNeese at 5-8. Overall the Mavericks are now 13-20 and the Cowboys are 10-23.

Starter Ryan Robinson got the win for the Mavs and Tyler Davis absorbed the loss for the Cowboys. Robinson, now 3-3, hurled 6.2 innings of six hit, two run ball and struckout three. Davis, now 3-6, went 7.1 innings and gave up eight hits and six runs while putting seven down on strikes.

Doubles by David McLeod and Michael Choice and a single by Matthew Otteman produced runs for the Mavs in the third.

The Cowboys came back with one run in the fourth on a single by Nick Eubanks.

UTA got its two runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and a throwing error and a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by McLeod. McNeese scored its final run on Brauninger's home run with one out.

Both teams had nine hits in the game. Jay Pitschka was the only Maverick to get two hits while Brauninger and Mace Hebert both had two hits for the Cowboys.

Cowboy catcher Taylor Freeman failed to get a hit in three at bats and had his hitting streak halted at 17 games.
