Cowboys bow to Sam Houston State 11-1 in series finale on Sunday
April 20, 2008
by Josh Brown SID Intern Huntsville, TX - The McNeese State Cowboys dropped an 11-1 decision to Sam H ouston State here on Sunday, the game ending after eight innings due to the 10 run rule. The win gave the Bearkats a sweep in their series with the Cowboys who fall to 10-29 on the year and to 5-13 in Southland Conference play. The Bearkats improved to 25-14 on the year while going to 12-6 in SLC action. The Cowboys got behind early and were never able to mount a comeback as the Bearkats finished them off in the eighth inning on a two-run homerun by Nick Zaleski. Michael Robbins, who made his first start of the season, was tagged with the loss, his first decision of the year. Bearkat starter Guillaume Duguay earned his second win of the year. Robbins gave up six runs on 10 hits in five innings while walking two and striking out one. Ryan Frantz pitched the last two and one-third innings for the Cowboys before eventually giving up the game ending homerun to Zaleski. The Bearkats got on the board first with four runs in the second inning to make it 4-0. The Cowboys cut into the lead in the fourth inning when Josh Cholley doubled and was advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Shon Landry. Nick Eubanks then singled through the left side to score Cholley and make the score 4-1. That would be all the Cowboys could muster on the day however, as Duguay only allowed four hits in seven innings to stifle the Cowboys. Zac Baker came on in the eighth inning, making his second appearance of the weekend, and pitched one inning while giving up one hit. Sam Houston added one run in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the eighth to complete the scoring. Cholley led the Cowboys on the afternoon with two hits. Eubanks, Keith Patnode and Justin Beitzel each had one for the Pokes. Eubanks had the only McNeese RBI. The Cowboys continue this stretch of road games when they go to Houston one Tuesday and then LSU on Wednesday. Both games are set for 6:30 PM starts. |
