Cowboys drop 3-1 decision to Texas State on Sunday

McNeese State got 5.1 innings of no-hit pitching from Michael Robbins but the Cowboys couldn't convert when needed and wound up bowing 3-1 to Texas State in a Southland Conference baseball game here Sunday afternoon.

The lefthanded Robbins wound up giving up only three hits and two runs while striking out eight batters in 6.2 innings.

McNeese had nursed a 1-0 lead through six innings when Texas State came up with two runs on one hit and and a Cowboy error in the seventh to take the lead and hold on for good. The Bobcats added another run in the ninth for their final margin.

The victory for Texas State completed a sweep of the Cowboys in their three game series. Texas State also goes to 27-23 overall and to 17-10 in league play while McNeese falls to 13-39 overal land to 7-20 in the SLC.

The Cowboys will conclude their season in a three game series with Lamar this coming week. The two teams will play at Cowboy Diamond on Thursday and then in Beaumont, TX on Friday and Saturday.

McNeese scored the game's first run and its only run in the bottom of the first with Sam Merrill plating Mace Hebert, who had tripled, with a sacrifice fly.

The Cowboys had a total of eight hits off Texas State winner Zack Tritz. Shon Landry led McNeese at the plate with three hits while Hebert, Taylor Freeman, Tony Coniglio, Josh Cholley and Kanon Broussard had one hit each.

The Bobcats had a total of four hits and no player had more than one.

Texas State scored two runs in the seventh with Spenser Dennis doubling in Lance Loftin who had walked and Dennis scored when Thomas Field was hit by a pitched ball.

The Bobcats scored their third run in the ninth on a passed ball. Tritz lifted his record to 9-2 while Robbins had his mark fall to 1-3.
