Steven Whitehead leads Gold team to 21-14 victory over the Blue in McNeese spring game

April 24, 2008

Steven Whitehead made his return to McNeese State football a big one here Thursday as he was the standout in the Cowboys annual spring game.

Before a record turnout of 2,535 and on the brand new artificial turf at Cowboy Stadium, Whitehead put on a display of pass catching and running as he led the Gold team to a 21-14 victory over the Blue.

The Cowboy senior to be, who missed 10 of his team's 12 games last year because of an injury after having been the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2006, scored two of the Gold's touchdowns on receptions of 22 yards from Derrick Fourroux and 32 yards from Beau Lasseigne.

All told he made seven catches for 101 yards during the game.

The other Gold score came on a 52 yard catch by tight end Brandon Broussard of a Fourroux pass.

Quarterback Mark Fontenot tossed both of the Blue team's touchdown passes, hitting Chad Davis from 17 yards out to begin the scoring and then connecting with Eldrick Jones on a 38 yard pass that capped the scoring in the fourth period.

The Blue totaled the most yards, 341 to 277 as Fontenot completed 21 of 32 passes for 262 yards. Fourroux led the Gold with an eight of 15 night for 122 yards.

The game's leading rusher was Toddrick Pendland of the Gold with 61 yards on 13 carries and speedy Marquael Beason led the Blue team with 39 yards on seven rushes.

Defensive leaders included Jeremy Haynes for the Blue and John Vigers for the Gold with a pass interception each.

Linebacker Nicholas Toti led the Gold in tackles with eight while Vigers and LaDarius Key had six each. Tyson Sibley with seven tackles and Brant Linde and Darrell Jenkins with six each led the Blue.
