Liz Morvant Hits First Home Run This Season
 
 
Softball Drops Doubleheader To Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- McNeese State's softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader here Wednesday night to Southern Miss by the scores of 4-2 and 10-2 to fall to 7-18 overall.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Southern Miss scored a single run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Lauren Castellvi to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles added three more runs in the third to extend its lead to 4-0. McNeese scored a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Megan Beard that sent Molly Guidry across the plate. Lindsey Langner scored in the fifth on a Southern Miss error to cut the lead to 4-2 but McNeese was unable to score runs in the sixth after leaving the bases loaded with one out. Langner and Beard led the Cowgirls with two hits apiece in the game, both players were 2 of 3 for the game.

Michelle LaVoie took the complete game loss, giving up six hits and struck out three to fall to 5-8 on the season.

In the nightcap, Southern Miss scored 10 runs on nine hits and one Cowgirl error. The Eagles took a 7-0 lead after two innings on seven hits. After a scoreless third inning, Liz Morvant put the Cowgirls on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run in the fourth. The homer is Morvant's first of the season. Southern Miss got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a Kristin Pilgrim home run. Guidry scored the Cowgirls' second run of the game on a wild pitch. Southern Miss added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on two hits to end the game due to the eight run rule.

Carmen Sittig fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up seven runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

McNeese will travel to Oklahoma this weekend to take part in the University of Oklahoma Worth Invitational. McNeese will face Drake at 12:15 p.m. and Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's schedule has the Cowgirls facing Drake at 11 a.m. and Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m.
