Cowgirls Drop Final Two Games At Oklahoma Worth Invitational

March 9, 2008

Box Score

NORMAN, Oklahoma-- McNeese State's softball team dropped its two games here Sunday at the Oklahoma Worth Invitational, falling 6-1 to Drake and 9-0 (5 innings) to Oklahoma in its second game of the day and final game of the tournament.

Drake scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. McNeese scored its only run of the game in the fifth when Michelle LaVoie reached first on an error. LaVoie went to second on a Molly Guidry walk and advanced to third on a single by Megan Beard. A walk by Whitney Corbello scored LaVoie from third. The Cowgirls weren't able to get anymore runs in the inning after leaving the bases loaded with one out. Drake's starting pitcher Brynn Dordel and sixth inning reliever Mandy Osborn held the Cowgirls hitless for the final two frames.

LaVoie and Langner picked up the only Cowgirl hits with one single apiece. The Cowgirls didn't help their cause as they committed four errors in the game. Bethany Stefinsky took the loss for the Cowgirls, falling to 0-3 on the year. Stefinsky gave up six runs on six hits and struck out four.

Oklahoma scored all its runs in the first three innings with two in the first and third and five in the second to take a 9-0 lead which would end up being the final score.

Holly Long broke up a no-hitter with a single in the third for the Cowgirls' only hit. Katie Shumaker (0-5) took the loss after giving up seven runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

McNeese (7-22) returns to Southland Conference play this week when the Cowgirls host Stephen F. Austin in a three game series. A 4 p.m. double header is scheduled for Wednesday with a single game at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Cowgirls will also host Grambling in a non conference doubleheader this Saturday at 2 p.m.
