Cowgirls drop final game of SLC series against SFA
March 13, 2008
By Josh Brown McNeese SID Intern Lake Charles, LA- The McNeese Cowgirls lost the final game of its Southland Conference series against Stephen F. Austin by a score of 9-6 here this afternoon. The Cowgirls fall to 8-24 on the season, 3-6 in SLC play while SFA improves to 17-12, 4-2 in SLC action. Cowgirl reliever Bethany Stefinsky was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-5 on the season while the Lady Jacks Lauren Luetge came on in relief to improve her record to 6-3 on the year. The Lady Jacks got on the board first in the top of the third inning with a single run when shortstop Mariah Davis walked, advanced to second on a single by Jessica Tullos and scored when she stole third base and advanced to home on a throwing error by McNeese. The Cowgirls answered right back in the bottom half of the inning when Tiffany Ritchie reached on a fielder's choice and was brought in to score on a Liz Morvant double to center field to knot the score at 1-1. The lead was short lived as the Lady Jacks score five unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning, with a grand slam by Ashley Struchtemeyer doing most of the damage. The Cowgirls answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a double by Molly Guidry, plating Holly Long and Rachel King to put the score at 6-3 in favor of SFA. The Cowgirls continued to fight back, with Jenny Clay walking and Michelle LaVoie singling and advancing to second on the throw while Clay advanced to third base. Long then hit a ball to left field which appeared to end the Cowgirls inning before the center fielder and left fielder collided, causing the ball to drop in and scoring Clay and LaVoie. Megan Beard then singled down the right field line to score Long and tying the game at 6-6. The Lady Jacks would come back with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning to finish the scoring on a Kari Hugie sacrifice fly and a two-run Kim Daley double to put the game at the final of 9-6. Leading the Cowgirls offensively were LaVoie, King and Guidry with two hits each. Lindsey Langner, Morvant, Long and Beard each collected one hit. Guidry had two RBI while Morvant and Beard had one RBI each. The games scheduled against Grambling State this weekend have been canceled and the Cowgirls are back in action on the 18th of March with a doubleheader on the road against Southern in Baton Rouge. Game 1 is set to start at 1 PM. |
