Rachel King's Single In The Bottom Of The Ninth Gives Cowgirls The 6-5 First Game Victory

LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's softball team recorded a doubleheader victory here Saturday over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a 6-5 score in both games. The Cowgirls won the first game in nine innings.

A two out game winning RBI single by Rachel King gave the Cowgirls the come from behind 6-5 win in the opening game of the series. TAMU-CC held a 3-0 lead after the third inning as the Cowgirls were held to two hits in the first four innings. McNeese got things going offensively in the fifth by cutting the lead to 3-2 on a two run homer by Holly Guidry that scored Michelle LaVoie. Two innings later, senior Megan Beard tied the game at three all with her second home run of the season. The run sent the game into extra innings.

Texas A&M-CC wouldn't go away as they retook the lead in the top of the ninth with two runs for a 5-3 lead. A two out two RBI home run by Margo Hurdt gave the Islanders the lead.

Jenny Clay Went 4 for 6 With Two Doubles, One Home Run and Three RBI's On The Day


Senior Jenny Clay started the second Cowgirl comeback with a solo home run to lead the inning off. After a double by Beard, LaVoie tripled, scoring Beard to tie the game. After a pop up to the pitcher by Guidry for the second out, King ended the game on a single up the middle that scored LaVoie from third.

LaVoie led the Cowgirls' 11 hit attack with a 3 for 4 plate appearance. Reliever Candace Duhon picked up her third victory of the season to improve to 3-2 overall. Duhon pitched six innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out one batter.

In the nightcap, TAMU-CC took a 1-0 lead in the first on a lead off single and scored from first on a Cowgirl error. McNeese got that run back and four more to take a 5-1 lead in the third. McNeese pounded out seven hits in the inning including doubles by Clay and Guidry. The Cowgirls added another run in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Clay doubled for the second time and scored on a RBI by Beard.

Texas A&M-CC made a comeback of their own in the sixth with three runs on four hits to cut the Cowgirl lead to 6-4. A two RBI single by Kim Connelly and a RBI double by Andrea Gonzales provided the runs for the Islanders. The Islanders added a single run in the top of the seventh on a Lauren Peters solo home run for a 6-5 Cowgirl lead. McNeese reliever Katie Shumaker came in the game and got Amber Robinson to ground out to Shumaker for the second out. Lauren Sanders reached first on a Cowgirl error and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Larissa Martin grounded out to second base for the second out then Stephanie Estrada walked. Shumaker got Hurdt to ground out to third to end the game.

Bethany Stefinsky was the credited with the victory to improve to 3-5 on the year and Shumaker picked up her first save of the year.

The Cowgirls collected 10 hits in the game and were led by Clay and Beard who both had two hits apiece. Clay was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI's while Beard was 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI.

The doubleheader victory improves the Cowgirls to 14-25 overall and 7-7 in the SLC and have won six of their last seven games. TAMU-CC falls to 13-18 overall and 6-11 in the SLC.

The series will conclude with a single game Sunday beginning at Noon.
