Molly Guidry's Walk Off Home Run Leads Cowgirls To Victory Over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
March 30, 2008
LAKE CHARLES-- After a hour and a half rain delay here Sunday, freshman Molly Guidry's seventh inning one out walk off solo home run gave the Cowgirls a 7-6 Southland Conference victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the Cowgirls' first SLC sweep this season. The victory improves the Cowgirls to 15-25 overall and 8-7 in league play. A five run first inning by the Cowgirls looked like the Cowgirls were going to pick up an easy victory but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would answer with four runs in the third to cut the Cowgirl lead to 5-4. A two RBI single by Michelle LaVoie and a two RBI double by Tiffany Ritchie and a TAMUCC error gave the Cowgirls the early 5-0 lead in the first. A RBI single by Stephanie Estrada and a three run homer by Kim Connelly provided the scoring for TAMUCC in the third to make it a one run game. The Islanders tied the game with a single run in the fourth on a Cowgirl error that scored Lauren Sanders to tie the game at five all. The Islanders took a 6-5 lead in the sixth on a Margo Hurdt RBI single that scored Larissa Martin. Martin led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Estrada. McNeese tied the game in their bottom half of the inning when Lindsey Langner went to first after being hit by a pitch. After Liz Morvant flew out to left field, senior Jenny Clay tripled to score Langer for the 6-6 tie. Cowgirl freshman reliever Candace Duhon got Lauren Peters to fly out to left for the first out then Kaylen Skinner reached base on a Cowgirl error. Duhon then struck out Amber Robinson for the second out. Melissa Casey, who came in to pinch run for Skinner advanced to third when Clay attempted to throw Casey out at second on an attempted steal. Noone was covering second and the ball landed in centerfield, advancing Casey to third. Duhon ended the scoring threat by getting Sanders to hit a grounder back to her for the third out setting up the game winning hit by Guidry. Clay led the Cowgirls' offense with a 3 for 3 plate appearance, missing hitting for the cycle by a home run. Clay doubled in the first, singled in the second, drew a walk in the fourth and tripled in the sixth. She also scored one run and had one RBI. Guidry was 2 for two. LaVoie and Ritchie led the Cowgirls with two RBI's apiece. Duhon picked up her fourth victory of the season to improve to 4-2. She gave up two hits, one run and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings. McNeese will travel to nationally ranked LSU this Wednesday for a single game beginning at 6 p.m. |
