Softball Team To Host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi This Weekend

March 27, 2008

McNeese State's softball team (12-25, 5-7 SLC) will return to the diamond this weekend when the Cowgirls host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a three game Southland Conference series. A doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday with the series concluding with a single game at noon Sunday.

The Cowgirls are coming off its second Southland Conference series victory of the season with a 2-1 series win at Sam Houston State Tuesday. The Cowgirls defeated the Bearkats 3-2, 3-1 in a doubleheader Tuesday before dropping the final game of the series by a 5-4 score Wednesday. McNeese took two out of three games from Northwestern State in the opening weekend of Southland Conference play for its first SLC series win.

McNeese will enter the weekend in eighth place and have won four of its last five games and five of its last eight.

Senior catcher/designated player Jenny Clay has been swinging a hot bat lately and is leading the team with a .366 batting average, .602 slugging percent and 10 doubles. She is second on the team with 14 stolen bases and third with 16 RBI's.

Pitcher/first baseman Michelle LaVoie leads the Cowgirls with 24 RBI's, eight pitching victories, 106 innings pitched and 37 strikeouts.

Texas A&M-CC will enter the weekend in ninth place with a 13-16 overall record and 6-9 SLC record. The Islanders have lost five of their last six games including two out of three to Sam Houston State last weekend.
