McNeese State Tennis Drops SLC Opening Matches

McNeese State's women's tennis team dropped its Southland Conference openers over the weekend with a 5-2 loss at Stephen F. Austin Saturday and a 5-2 loss at Sam Houston State Sunday.

McNeese dropped the doubles point at SFA with losses no. 2 and 3. The Cowgirls' no. 1 doubles team of Meri Gol Alamo and Victoria Martinez defeated Gabriela Gadeva and Tanya Smolnikova 8-1.

Stephen F. Austin went on to win four singles matches to take the overall match victory. Victoria Martinez defeated Mary Harrison 7-6, 6-2 at the no. 3 singles and Petra Gudelj defeated Tanya Smolnikova 6-4, 6-1 at the no. 5 singles for the Cowgirls' two points.

In Sunday's loss to Sam Houston State, McNeese took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Maria Frausto and Petra Gudelj defeated Roxana Martinez and Statsa Vujosevic 8-5 at the no. 2 doubles and Inga Efimenko and Natasha Jongeneel teamed at the no. 3 doubles to defeat Eleonora Kuruc and Patricia Manzur 8-5. The Cowgirls managed only one singles victory by way of Gudelj's 6-2, 6-4 victory over Manzur at the no. 5 singles.

The two losses drops the Cowgirls to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in league play. The Cowgirls will host Texas-Arlington at 10 a.m. Saturday and Texas State at 10 a.m. Sunday in Southland Conference matches.
