The Gary Williams Era

June 11, 2008

As he begins his 20th season at Maryland, head basketball coach Gary Williams will build upon an already impressive resume. Williams, a proud alum, inherited a program that had won just nine games and finished last in the ACC prior to his arrival. The Terps posted 19 wins and advanced to the second round of the NIT in 1990, making Williams the first coach in school history to guide the Terrapins to the postseason in his first year on the bench. That was just a sign of things to come as the program reached new heights under Williams including numerous milestones since 2001:

• 2002 National Champions and No. 1-ranked team in the nation
• 2002 ACC & National Coach of the Year
• 2001 NCAA Final Four
• 2004 ACC Champions
• Three Sweet Sixteen Appearances
• 604 career wins including a school record 397 at Maryland
• Leads all active coaches with seven wins over top-ranked teams
• School-record 32 wins in 2002
• One of just three coaches to own 500 career wins and lead their alma matter to a national championship
• Seventh-winningest active coach
• The third-ranked coach - trailing only Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski - in both career wins and conference wins in the nation's best basketball conference
• Seven players drafted in the NBA who played for Williams at Maryland since 2000
