Terp Swimmers Compete at U.S. Olympic Trials

July 7, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. - Five University of Maryland swimmers competed in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, which took place from June 29 to July 5 at the Qwest Center.

On Sunday, rising senior Eric Cullen finished 46th overall with a time of 1:04.04 in the 100-meter breaststroke. World-record holder Brendan Hansen, who won three Olympic medals in Athens in 2004, captured the event in 59:84.

Rising junior Jen Vogel, who entered the day listed 128th on the psych sheet in the 100-meter butterfly, finished 93rd in 1:02.30.

During Wednesday's 100-meter men's freestyle, rising senior Dong Kim placed 105th with a time of 51:75. Rising juniors Patty DeScenza and Nina Rossi placed 34th and 92nd with times of 2:14.58 and 2:20.53, respectively, in the women's 200-meter butterfly. DeScenza's time was more than two seconds better than her qualifying mark.

Kim finished the Terps' run in the trials with a 74th-place performance in the 50 freestyle on Thursday. The American record was broken twice during the span of the trials.

All world competitions use the metric system, which varies from the English system the Terps swim during most collegiate events. In order to reach the semifinals in each event, swimmers must have finished among the top 16 overall in preliminary heats.

The top eight finishers in semifinals moved to the finals, with the top two swimmers in each event earning berths on the U.S. team heading to Beijing next month.
