BALTIMORE, Md. - The Morgan State Legacy Meet was full of surprises and interesting situations while the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fought through to make the best of the meet. Some equipment malfunctions and countless restarts left many athletes wanting to leave their mark on an already tough evening. Some familiar faces also appeared in what was a reunion for the Hawks. Allodin Fothergill, fresh off of a week of absence, did not lose a step as his first 400-meter dash of the outdoor season garnered success. With his time of 46.40 he earned 1st place and qualified for NCAA regionals. In the same event, Paul Jones-Burden and Corey Alexander placed 15th and 16th with times of 48.59 and 48.64, which was Alexander's personal record (PR). Jerome Pyuzza's also had a PR in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.78 placing him 15th. Amon Kiprotich and Peter Sang also saw PRs fall as they blazed to a 4:03.76 and 4:04.61 time placing them sixth and seventh. James Moore had a solid outing in the high jump propelling himself to second place with a 1.98-meter performance. He then triple jumped 13.77 meters for an eighth place finish. Former UMES standout Jason Daley was also at the meet and he did not let his alma mater down, placing 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 7.50 meters. Charles Elmer also competed in the same event, jumping 6.76 meters and placing 8th. Thomas Keane-Dawes along with Fothergill, Jones-Burden, and Alexander proved the right combination as the 4x400 meter relay team ran their fastest time of the year at 3:12.97, placing fifth. The Lady Hawks had an exciting day also as Tanisha Wisdom led the way, clawing the competition. Wisdom was met at the starting line of the 100-meter dash by good friend and graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Danieth Pryce. Both record holders for the school fared well as Pryce placed 2nd with a time of 11.96 and Wisdom with a fourth place finish in 12.18 seconds. Merrecia James and Celia Whyte dominated the 1500-meter run placing first and third. Their time was 4:40.51 and 4:53.73. Saisha Woodward had a PR in the shot put of 13.80 meters, placing 2nd. Tiona Long placed ninth in the same event with a throw of 11.67 meters. Sherie Brown, Whyte, James, and Wisdom combined talents and broke the school record in the 4x400 relay and qualified for NCAA regionals with a time of 3:40.50. The meet saw many solid performances as the women took fourth place overall in the 10 team field and the men took seventh in a 12 team field. Both squads will look for better finishes next weekend when they travel to the historic Penn Relays on April 24 and 25. |
