PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks could not withstand a 13 point second half run by Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) as they were downed 73-60 on Monday night in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES (4-25, 2-12 MEAC) had narrowed the gap to five on a pair of Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) free throws before the Wildcats went on a tear as they scored 13 unanswered points, 11 of which came in a span of a minute and five seconds and featured a thunderous Dewayne Pettus dunk, to put them up 59-41 with 7:41 remaining. B-CU (11-17, 5-9 MEAC) would increase their lead to as many as 22 on a John Holmes, a Salisbury native, put back dunk to make it 71-49 with 1:37 left in regulation. However, the Hawks closed the game on an 11-2 run that was capped off by an Ishmawiyl McFadden (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz H.S.) three-pointer at the buzzer to trim the final margin. McFadden finished with 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds. B-CU was without the services of starter Jimmy Hudson for most of the second period due to an injury, but Pettus and Holmes stepped up in his absence. Pettus led all scorers with a game-high 29 points and five steals, while Holmes recorded a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds on 72.7 percent (8-of-11) shooting from the floor. Kevan Creppy also grabbed 10 boards before fouling out. Tyson led the Hawks with a team-high 18 points, including a perfect seven-of-seven from the foul line, in all 40 minutes of action. Gary Lee (Flint, Mich./Northwestern University) added 14 points to go along with career-highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Brandon Moore (Baltimore, Md./Southern H.S.) matched a personal best with six points, while setting a career-high with eight rebounds. In a tightly contested first half, B-CU had pushed their lead out to eight on a Pettus field-goal, but UMES would cut the score to five, 28-23, going into the break on a last second McFadden layup. The difference in the game was field goal shooting where B-CU finished 48.2 percent (27-of-56), while limiting the Hawks with a solid defensive effort to 31.8 percent 21-of-66). The Hawks outrebounded B-CU (46-40), including holding a sizeable advantage on the offensive glass (23-14). UMES also scored more second chance points (18-11), but gave up more points in the paint (30-24) and points off turnovers (17-13) as both teams committed 13 mistakes each. UMES will wrap up their home season against Coppin State on Saturday, March 1 as they host Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 E.T. and can be heard on WTGM-AM 960 The Team or live on the internet at www.umeshawks.com. |
