PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team has a lot going for them these days. They are tied for second place in the conference and have won a school record six straight games. Off the court they are just as successful and senior standout Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich/Lansing Home School) has been a perfect example of that success. Besides being a nominee for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, Veltkamp was announced today as a First Team selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women's Basketball Team, a program from the College Sports Information Director's Association (CoSIDA).

Veltkamp is a selection in the District Two, University Division, along with four other of the region's top players, Maryland's Crystal Langhorne, American's Elizabeth Hayes, Villanova's Stacie Williams and George Washington's Sarah-Jo Lawrence. The University Division is inclusive of only DI schools.

As a first-team selection, Veltkamp goes to the national ballot where she will be voted on as an Academic All-American. Voting begins on February 12.

In order to be voted upon for All-District honors, players must carry a minimum of a 3.2 grade point average (GPA) and be a significant contributor to the team. Veltkamp is one of two seniors on the Lady Hawks and was the 2005-06 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She is a Human Ecology major with a GPA of 3.98.

Fellow senior Brittany Adkins (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech H.S.) was also on the All-District ballot.
