PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Basketball teams will face Hampton University tonight in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The Lady Hawks (14-8, 7-2 MEAC) improved their school-record winning streak to seven games as they cruised past Howard on Saturday, 105-87. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) posted her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa./National Christian Academy) matched a career-high with 24 points. Josephine McLane (Centreville, Va./Westfield H.S.) chipped in with a career-high 16 points as well. Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich./Lansing Home School) and Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md./Mardela H.S.) finished with 16 and 12 points respectively. Hampton (12-9, 6-3 MEAC) has dropped its last two games, including a 58-36 loss to Delaware State on Saturday. With the loss UMES moved into sole possession of second place in the MEAC standings. Rachel Butler and Artavia Burns lead the Pirates scoring attack with 11.7 and 11 points per game respectively. UMES dropped their only game to Hampton last season, 76-41, and trail in the all-time series 25-6 with half of those wins coming in the Fred Batchelor era. The Hawks (3-21, 1-8 MEAC) snapped a 12 game losing streak and picked up their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season behind a solid performance from freshmen Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) who led all scorers with 20 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the foul line. Davis also added a career-high eight assists to go along with four steals and four rebounds. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.), the leading scorer in the MEAC, finished just below his season average with 18 points.
Hampton (13-8, 7-2 MEAC) is coming off a road loss to Delaware State on Monday, 67-58. Rashad West, a reigning MEAC First Team Member, leads the Pirates with 17.3 points per game, while Vincent Simpson is adding 10.5 points per game off the bench. UMES dropped both games to Hampton last season and trails in the all-time series 16-5, including having lost the last 13 contests. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
