No. 30 Southern Miss dealt the knockout punch early on in the contest, striking for seven runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 9-0 lead. Memphis was never ever to catch up as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 12-6 win in game two to win the three-game Conference USA series on Saturday.

It took the Memphis 26 pitches before it could record an out. The Golden Eagles first eight batters reached base and the first seven scored as USM jumped out to a 7-0 cushion after one inning of play.

Trey Cuevas banged out a two-run double in the first and made it 2-for-2 with a two-run homer in the second to make it 9-0.

Memphis battled back, using Trey Wiedman's seventh home run of the year to get on the board in the fourth. K.K. Chalmers and Chris Newsom then drew walks and Daniel Kaufmann was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Chris Kirkland. Kirkland worked a walk to bring Chalmers home for the 9-2 ballgame.

Memphis continued to claw back with two more runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth.

However, it was not enough as Southern Miss crossed two in the eight for the final 12-6 tally.

Brach Davis took the loss, whole Golden Eagles pitcher Collin Cargill earned the win in relief of Josh Billeaud.
