Southern Miss righthander Barry Bowden showed why he has the league's lowest ERA, as he struck out six and held Memphis hitless through five innings to lead the 30th-ranked Golden Eagles to a sweep of the series with a 13-0 shutout in the finale at Pete Taylor Park on Sunday afternoon.

Bowden, who was perfect though 4.2 innings, was not the only star in the home uniform as rightfielder Michael Ewing swung a big stick, pounding a pair of home runs and driving in three. He homered in consecutive innings, belting a two-run blast in the six-run fourth and a solo shot in the fifth. Southern Miss scored in every inning except the third. Trey Sutton led the Golden Eagles with a 3-for-4 day with three runs scored and three RBI. Drew Carson drove in three runs and was perfect in a pair of official at-bats.

The finale proved to be much like the previous two with USM jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. Bo Davis led off with one of his two hits--a single to centerfield and Brian Dozier perfectly executed a hit-and-run, bouncing a single through the right side. An infield single by Sutton scored Davis and Kyle Maxie, Friday night's hero, knocked an RBI-single through the right side for the 2-0 USM lead. A sac fly by Carson made it a three-run game.

An RBI-single by Davis made it 4-0 after two innings, but the Golden Eagles put things away with a big six-run fourth. They sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning that was highlighted by homers from Carson and Ewing. Carson's was a towering, wind-aided shot over the centerfield wall, while Ewing's was a no-doubter to right. Sutton banged a two-out RBI-double to right and Carson produced his second hit of the inning in the form of a run-scoring double to the left centerfield gap to make it 10-0

After Ewing's second blast made it 11-0, Brett Bowen broke up the no-hit bid in the seventh when he lined reliever Brian Leach's first offering into rightfield for a single. Bowden and Leach combined to face just two over the minimum to hand Memphis its third shutout of the year.

The Golden Eagles tacked on two more two in the sixth on a two-run single by Keith Winstead for the 13-0 final.

Will Hudgens was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-6 on the year. He allowed eight runs on eight hits in just 3.1 innings. Neil Schenk was also unable to hold the hot-hitting USM offense off the board, as he gave up three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Marcus Barnes also got an inning of work in and allowed a pair of runs.

Prior to today, Memphis had lost eight straight C-USA games, but managed to avoid falling to ninth in the league standings due to UAB's inability to win a game. Those fortunes ran out this afternoon as the Blazers ran away from the UCF Knights, for a 14-3 win in seven innings. The Tiger loss, combined with the UAB win drops Memphis to ninth place.

The Tigers will now head to Starkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the final non-conference contest of the season on Tuesday, May 13. First pitch for game is set for 6:30 p.m. Memphis defeated Mississippi State, 9-8, in 10 innings at AutoZone Park on April 8.
