MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis men's soccer team held its annual silent auction Thursday night at the university's South Campus facility. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the men's soccer program and a trip to Argentina the team is planning for next spring.
The evening included a dinner provided by Central BBQ and a talk given by guest speaker Tiger head football coach Tommy West to the 150 in attendance. In addition, a silent auction took place throughout the evening. Everyone was allowed to bid on numerous items, both of the soccer and non-soccer variety. Jeff Brightwell served as emcee for the event.
Michael Coburn, who will be a senior next fall, won the team's Player of the Year award for 2007-2008 season. The award is voted on by players and the coaching staff.
The women's soccer team was among those in the crowd supporting the men's team. Men's head Coach Richie Grant presented women's head Coach Brooks Monagahan with an autographed Juan Sebastian Veron jersey.
"The evening was a success," said Grant. "I would like to thank Jeff Brightwell, Coach West and everyone who continues to support our program."
Approximately $20,000 was raised during the evening. The Tigers will play tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
