OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Memphis men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Ole Miss Invite today, returning home with nine NCAA regional qualifying marks and 15 season-bests.

Steffen Nerdal won the men's hammer throw, kicking off an amazing day for the Tigers. His mark of 64.80m (212-07) led the field. Knut Syversen took third in the event posting a personal-best 55.09m (180-09).

Susan King won the women's discus, set a new school record and extended her NCAA regional qualifying mark with a launch of 51.23m (168-01). She improved her previous record by almost six feet. Sivan Aballi took second in the event also posting a regional qualifying mark of 47.83m (156-11). King also won the women's shot (17.37m). Aballi took fifth (15.89m) and Charlotte Abrahamsen placed eighth with 14.40m. All women set NCAA regional qualifying marks in the event.

Nerdal placed third in the discus with a mark of 53.72m (176-03) and Seth Major set a personal-best mark of 53.05m (174-00) placing fourth. Both men set NCAA regional qualifying marks in the event.

Syversen, Glen Edwards and Major all set NCAA regional qualifying marks and personal bests in the men's shot. Syversen posted a mark of 17.18m (56-04.50) taking third. Edwards placed fourth with 17.13m (56-02.50) and Major hit 16.91m (55-05.75).

Setting a personal-best mark in the long jump was Jerome Leslie as he notched a tenth place showing with a leap of 6.79m (22-03.50). Aaron Whetstone improved his NCAA regional qualifying mark finishing third in the triple jump with 15.24m (50-00.00).

 

 

In the women's pole vault, Whitney Bolton posted a season-best 3.55m (11-07.25). Teammate Ashton Baldwin also registered the same mark. Baldwin finished third and Bolton took fourth.

Christian McDonald placed fifth in the javelin with a distance of 59.16m (194-01). Brian Prackett tied his season best in the pole vault with 4.45m (14-07.25).

Tina Sherratt ran for a time of 4:32.71 in the women's 1500m run, besting her season time by over six seconds. Wesley Garrett also registered a season-best in the men's 1500m run as he clocked a time of 4:10.93, placing tenth.

In the 100 meter hurdles freshman Holland Thomas posted a personal-best time of 14.48, capturing tenth. Later on in the day she set another personal-best this time in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.52.

Both Tiger track and field teams will return to action on Thursday, May 15 as the Conference USA Outdoor Championships will begin. The meet will be hosted by the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP).
