The University of Memphis women's basketball team will put its two-game winning streak on the line with a C-USA contest at league unbeaten UTEP, Sunday, beginning at 1:00 (MT).
UTEP comes in to the game after winning three straight road games to open league play, then coming back for a 67-64 win over UAB Friday night.
Memphis enters having won its first conference road game since Jan. 21, 2005 Friday night at Tulane, 74-66. Four different Tigers scored double-digit points in the win, led by 16 points from Latoya Bullard. All 16 of Bullard's points came in the first half, helping Memphis build a 39-33 halftime lead. Memphis spent the majority of the second half continuing to hang on to the six point advantage, unable to pull away to double-digits, but also holding Tulane scoreless from the field for over five minutes Memphis then answering Tulane's run that cut the advantage to just two points with 59 seconds remaining with six straight points from Jessica Hall to close out a 74-66 victory. Hall scored 13 points in the win, adding five assists and three steals and tying a career-high with seven rebounds. Jessica Jackson and Alex Winchell rounded out the double-digit scorers, with Winchell hitting two three-point field goals the day after her 19th birthday before having to leave early in the second half due to foul trouble.
UTEP has won nine straight games and is 7-0 in the Don Haskins Center so far this season. The last unbeaten league team, UTEP is led by sophomore Jareica Hughes, the league's newcomer and freshman of the year last year. Hughes leads four UTEP players who average double-digit points heading into the weekend with 13.8 ppg. She has some help manning the point this season as TCU transfer Natasha Lacy is averaging 12.1 ppg after sitting out last season per NCAA transfer rules. Lacy leads the team with 70 assists and 45 stealsw heading in to the weekend. A pair of Polish players round out the double-digit scorers. Against UAB on Friday night, UTEP came back from a 51-36 deficit with 11:32 remaining to close out the game on a 31-13 run.
Memphis is being led in scoring by Latoya Bullard in conference games. Bullard averages 17.0 ppg, while teammate Jessica Hall 12 ppg in the first four C-USA contests.
The Lady Tiger defense has turned up the pressure since league play began, forcing opponents in to 82 turnovers in the first four games, while committing only 62 turnovers of its own in four contests.
The offense and defense has evened the score with Memphis averaging 63.2 ppg while the defense gives up 63.2 ppg.
