BATON ROUGE, La. - - The University of Memphis women's tennis team (2-4, 0-1 C-USA) dropped its league opener to Southern Miss, Friday, at a neutral site match in Baton Rouge, La.

Memphis trailed early after losing the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, 8-4. The Lady Tigers answered back with singles wins from Ashley Murdock and Lindsey Wiseman at No. 1 and 5 singles, respectively, but USM used wins at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles to close out the victory.

"We played well and had a chance to win this match," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "But we're definitely getting better. This is the exact same line-up for USM that beat us in two hours last year, 7-0, so we're making good progress."

Memphis remains in Baton Rouge and will face Murray State and Southern University, Saturday and Sunday.
