CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - -
Junior Kristin Chamberlain (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes) won her opening round in the ITA Pre-Qualifying Singles Draw, Thursday, defeating North Carolina Central's Tatiana Velasquez, 6-2, 7-6 (12) to advance to a second round match, but then with little rest opportunity, fell 6-1, 6-1 to Middle Tennessee's Pooja Kommireddi in the quarterfinals.
The junior played in the lone Round of 16 match, winning the first set 6-2, but then winning 12-10 in the tiebreak for the second set and the right to advance to the quarterfinal round. By the time Chamberlain finished her Round of 16 match, the other quarterfinal round matches were already on and she had to turn right back around and take to the court against Kommireddi, who had received a first-round bye.
The loss ends Chamberlain's singles schedule at the regional, but she will have most of Thursday to recover before doubles play begins at 4 p.m. (ET). Chamberlain and sophomore Amanda Brown will face Louisville's Lindsey Jones and Jo-Ann VanAerde in the Round of 64.
