Lakers Fall to #10 Kent State

Erie, Pa - At the end of January, the Mercyhurst Club hockey team suffered two tough losses to Kent State University, ranked 10th in the nation among the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The Kent State Flashes out scored the Lakers both Friday and Saturday nights 6-3 and 5-3 respectively. In game one, Kent State started out strong, scoring two goals before the end of the first period. The Lakers stepped up there effort in the second, scoring three unanswered goals of their own making the score 3-2 only to have Kent State answer with two more goals to make the score 4-3 after two periods of play. Kent State would add two more goals in the third to finish the game 6-3. In Saturday's game both teams traded goals in the first two periods, but it was Mercyhurst who had the lead for most of the third period. It wasn't until late in the game that Mercyhurst gave up the lead after being down a couple of men due to some questionable officiating. Kent State was able to pull ahead late in the game on the man-advantage and Mercyhurst was unable to recover after the Flashes intercepted a pass between Mercyhurst players and scored on the empty net, making the final score 5-3. The Lakers now stand at 10-9-5 overall, and 5-3-1 within the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL). Next up for the Lakers will be games against John Carroll and Slippery Rock University. |
