Bay City, Mich. - Following last season's 32-20 mark and fourth-place finish in the GLIAC regular season standings, the Mercyhurst baseball squad was picked fifth in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll. Mercyhurst, who returns 17 letterwinners, seven position starters and three All-GLIAC honorees, received 37 points, which put them five points ahead of Findlay and 12 points behind Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State, which tied for third with one first place vote apiece. Defending champion, Grand Valley State, was ranked No. 1 with five first place votes and 60 points. Ashland finished the 2007 regular season atop the standings and was pegged second in the 2008 preseason poll. The Lakers posted a 6-10 mark last season against the four teams ranked above them in the poll. So far in 2008, the Lakers are 5-3 with wins over Lynn, Concordia St. Paul, Wheeling Jesuit and Division I St. Bonaventure. They complete their Florida trip March 1 against Bryant. The Lakers' first home game of the season is also the GLIAC opener. Findlay visits Erie on March 21-22 for a four-game series. |
