Three Lakers Named to GLIAC Men's Basketball All-Academic Team
April 23, 2008
Bay City, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its Men's Basketball All-Academic Team Wednesday, and three Mercyhurst men's basketball student-athletes -- Terry Smith, Luke Handley and Cory Tubo -- were honored. To be named to the All-Academic Team, the student-athlete must achieve a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and be an academic sophomore and starter or key reserve. All three Lakers are seniors and competed in their final seasons with the program in 2007-08. Along with excelling in the classroom, they played key roles in helping the program to its third-straight GLIAC Tournament berth and third-straight year with at least 15 wins. Smith, who was also named GLIAC All-Academic in 2005-06, is a computer systems major and was named All-GLIAC South Division First Team and GLIAC South Division All-Defensive Team in 2007-08. He led the team in scoring at 17.2 points per game and led the GLIAC in steals, as well. He finished his four-year career ranked sixth in scoring with 1,384 points. Tubo also makes his second appearance on the GLIAC All-Academic Team after being named following his junior season in 2006-07. Tubo is a business major. Despite being slowed by an injury in 2007-08, he played in 15 games and made four starts, averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Handley, an intelligence studies major, makes his first appearance on the team. He logged a career-high six starts during his senior campaign and appeared in 11 games. The Laker men's basketball team landed two on the GLIAC All-Academic Team in 2006-07 and four in 2005-06. |
