Lewis Beats Mercyhurst In Three Games

Romeoville, Ill. - The Mercyhurst men's volleyball team was unable to pick up its first conference win, losing to Lewis 30-19, 34-32, 30-14 Friday.

Mercyhurst struggled in both the first and third games but posted a good showing in game two. The Lakers led by as many as four points on numerous occasions early in the game before Lewis came back to score four in a row to take a 24-22 lead. Jeff Hartman, Dave Newman, and Jonathan Gurr had consecutive kills to put the Lakers back on top and the teams traded the lead back-and-forth the rest of the way. Mercyhurst led 32-31 but Lewis got a kill and a block from Billy Sahagian, followed by a Drew Pickering kill to get the 34-32 win.

Newman ended with a team-high eight kills and a .500 attack percentage. David Hatten had 26 assists, seven digs and six blocks. Hartman had six kills and a .444 attack percentage.

Lewis improved to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, while Mercyhurst fell to 3-14 and 0-7 in conference. The Lakers will play at Loyola Chicago Saturday.
