Lakers Split on Final Day of East Coast Duals

Jan. 26, 2008

Pembroke, N.C. - The 12th-ranked Mercyhurst wrestling squad closed the East Coast Duals Saturday with a 33-10 victory over Carson-Newman but a tight 20-12 loss to No. 10 Newberry.

The Lakers, now 7-9 on the year, finished the weekend event winning three of the four dual matches.

In the 9 a.m., session, Mercyhurst received a decision at 133 from freshman Lance Pitcel. Junior Brian Pogel, ranked third in Division II at 149 pounds, defeated Latra Collick, 5-0. Sophomore Andy Lamancusa stayed perfect on the weekend with a 5-2 decision over Christian Johnson, and senior Hudson Harrison notched a 3-0 decision at 165.

Newberry, however, won the final four bouts, two by major decision and one by fall to complete a come-from-behind dual win over the Lakers.

Mercyhurst bounced back, though, routing Carson-Newman 33-10 in Saturday's second session. Junior Payne Lint earned a 5-0 win at 125, and red-shirt junior Braxdon Scaletta rolled to a 15-0 technical fall over Drew Roberts at 133.

Pogel picked up his third fall in four matches, pinning Kurtis Hess in 2:06. Lamancusa complete a perfect 4-0 weekend, as well, winning 15-4 at 157. Hudson Harrison won by forfeit at 165, and 197-pounder Trevor Gallo pinned Adam Cable in 1:50. Heavyweight Kenny Bluska capped the dual win with a 10-5 decision.

Mercyhurst travels to Ithaca, N.Y., on Feb. 2 for a tri-match against Binghamton, Ithaca and Millersville. Action is scheduled for 12 p.m.
