No. 14 Lakers Fall to No. 8 Pitt-Johnstown in Season's Final Dual
Feb. 22, 2008
Johnstown, Pa. - Junior Brian Pogel, sophomore Andy Lamancusa and red-shirt freshman Josh Shields picked up victories, but it wasn't enough for the 14th-ranked Laker wrestlers, who fell 26-9 at No. 8 Pitt Johnstown Friday evening. It was Mercyhurst's final dual match of the season and the team, under first-year coach Mike Wehler, finishes with a 10-14 record. The Lakers are now 1-7-1 all-time against UPJ, and with the win, the Mountain Cats improve to 17-5. Pogel, ranked third in the nation at 149 pounds, notched a 7-0 win over Adam Whetsone to give Mercyhurst its first points of the match. Fifth-ranked Lamancusa followed that with a 6-1 decision against Mazen Kholi at 157, pulling Mercyhurst to 11-6. At 165, Mercyhurst senior Hudson Harrison, ranked sixth in Division II, fell 11-8 to Kyle Keane. The loss snapped Harrison's 11-match winning streak and was his first since Jan. 12. Shields, wrestling at 174, made his return to the mat after not wrestling since Feb. 2. Prior to his injury, he had won nine of his last 10 bouts and he picked up where he left off with a 5-0 decision over Albert Miles. Shields' win cut UPJ's lead to 14-9, but Pitt-Johnstown sent three nationally ranked wrestlers to the mats for the final three bouts and all three earned wins. The Lakers return to Pitt-Johnstown on Friday, Feb. 29 for the East Region Championships. Mercyhurst finished second in the team race in 2007, and Payne Lint (125) and Lamancusa will be defending their individual titles. COMPLETE RESULTS |
