The Wayne State women's hockey team came into Erie winless against Mercyhurst in 33 tries. This afternoon, the Warriors enjoyed their first victory over the No. 7/6-ranked Lakers, 5-4 in overtime.

Wayne State used a big first period to set the tempo, leading 3-1 after the first stanza. The Warriors scored again in the second to lead, 4-1, before Mercyhurst's Valerie Chouinard cut the deficit to 4-2, entering the second intermission.

WSU played a defensive third period, being outshot 23-9 in the process. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Mercyhurst scored twice to tie the game at four, the tyer coming three minutes left in regulation by senior forward Sherilyn Fraser.

Wayne State scored the game winner halfway into the five-minute overtime session as defender Tegan Schroeder shot the puck at senior goaltender Laura Hosier, but the rebound went to junior forward Sam Poyton, who banged it home.

Mercyhurst outshot the Warriors, 56-26.

Hosier made 21 saves, while Valery Turcotte stopped 52 shots and earned the game's second star behind Poyton.

Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta's record-setting 20-game scoring streak ended today in the loss.

Mercyhurst will try to redeem itself as the teams conclude the weekend series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
