Wayne State Comes From Behind to Defeat No. 7 'Hurst, 3-2 in Overtime

Detroit, Mich. - No. 7 women's hockey led 2-0 with five minutes remaining in regulation, but instead, lost 3-2 in overtime to host Wayne State Saturday afternoon. The win snapped Mercyhurst's three-game winning streak and dropped the Lakers to 22-7-3 overall. More importantly, Mercyhurst and Wayne State are now tied for first place in the conference at 7-2-1. The Warriors improved their overall mark to 19-8-3.

Mercyhurst scored once in the first and second periods, both coming on the power play. The first-period marker came by Jesse Scanzano from Valerie Chouinard, while the second goal came from Stephanie Jones and Cassea Schols.

The score remained 2-0 visitors until the 14:57 mark as WSU's Sam Poyton scored on the power play, assisted by Melissa Boal and Chelsea Burnett. The Warriors tied the contest less than two minutes later as Boal returned the favor of Poyton and the second assist coming from Burnett.

Poyton scored the game winner 2:02 into overtime, assisted by Katrina Protopapas and Lindsay DiPietro.

Prior to this season, Wayne State was winless against Mercyhurst in 33 opportunities. The Warriors are 2-1-1 against the Lakers this season.

Mercyhurst outshot Wayne State, 33-25. The Lakers were 2-for-7 on the power play while the Warriors were 1-for-9.

Mercyhurst's last regular season weekend series is a home-and-home series against Robert Morris. The Lakers host the Colonials on Friday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m., while the teams play in Moon Township the following evening at 7:35 p.m.
