Mercyhurst Outscores Robert Morris 5-2

Feb. 29, 2008

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst got goals from five different players Friday night to turn back visiting Robert Morris 5-2 at the Ice Center. The Lakers, ranked seventh nationally, improved to 23-7-3 overall and to 8-2-1 in College Hockey America. The Colonials dropped to 12-20-1 and 2-9-0 respectively.

Mercyhurst 'freshman' Geena Prough began the scoring on 'senior' night as she tallied her 9th goal of the season on a power play at 16:49 of the first. Freshman Vicki Bendus assisted. The Lakers owned a 22-7 advantage in first period shots.

Robert Morris tied the game early in the second on a goal by sophomore Chelsea Walkland. But the Lakers scored the next three goals of the game within a two-minute span to take charge. Freshmen forwards Ashley Cockell, her sixth, and Jesse Scanzano, her 13th, sandwiched scores around the fourth of the year from senior Sherilyn Fraser. Cockell's power play goal came at 5:54, Fraser's even-strength marker came at 6:10, and Scanzano's power play tally followed at 7:30. RMU forward Ali Proodian closed the second period scoring with an unassisted marker at 8:05. Mercyhurst had an 18-9 shot advantage in the middle period.

Junior transfer Hayley McMeekin had the only goal of the third when she notched her 8th of the season at 18:56 into an empty met.

Mercyhurst outshot the Colonials 58-20 in the contest and converted 3 of 8 power plays. The Colonials were blanked in six power play chances.

Senior goalie Laura Hosier picked up her 18th win of the season and 71st in her career. RMU junior Brianne McLaughlin (9-20-1) took the loss. Mercyhurst honored its six seniors before the game: Danielle Ayearst, Krister Erickson, Sherilyn Fraser, Laura Hosier, Jackie Jarrell, and Stephanie Jones.
