No. 10 Lakers Dominate Rollins

Feb. 24, 2008

Box Score

Winter Park, Fla. - The Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2001 season, defeating Rollins 16-6 Sunday. The Lakers, ranked No. 10 in Division II, outscored the Tars 11-1 in the first half and cruised to the win.

Rollins used a deliberate, ball-control offense in the early going and trailed just 1-0 through the first 10 minutes of action. But Breanna Haggerty scored four goals in a five minute stretch to put Mercyhurst ahead 5-0 and forced Rollins to abandon that game plan to play catch-up.

Over the final nine minutes of the first half, Mercyhurst scored six goals, including Haggerty's fifth of the game, and the Laker defense held Rollins to just one score in the opening half.

Haggerty scored her sixth and final goal early in the second half as Mercyhurst built a 16-3 lead before Rollins finished with three goals in the last seven minutes to cut into the deficit.

For the Lakers, Haggerty scored six goals for the second consecutive game and has 14 points through just two contests. The junior All-American candidate has now scored at least one goal in 26 straight games and has at least three goals in 10 consecutive contests. Katy Miller added three goals and an assist and Jessie Horeth and Kimberly Masterton each had one goal and two assists. Maeve McGoff made 10 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season between the pipes.

Mercyhurst held a 27-19 advantage in shots but Rollins picked up 23 ground balls compared to just 20 for the Lakers. The Tars also won 15-of-25 draw controls.

As a team, Mercyhurst set a school record by scoring 41 goals in back-to-back games.

Rollins falls to 0-2 on the season and the Lakers improve to 2-0. Mercyhurst will play Notre Dame (Ohio) Tuesday in Winter Park, Fla. on Rollins' home field.
