Haggerty Scores Game-Winner for Lakers in 9-8 Victory Over Bloomsburg

April 19, 2008

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Breanna Haggerty scored the game-winner with 2:08 left in regulation as the Mercyhurst Lakers women's lacrosse team pulled out an 9-8 victory against a tough Bloomsburg team Saturday. Haggerty scored three goals and freshman Kimberly Masterton added another three to lead the Lakers. Goalkeeper Maeve McGoff had a career-high 17 saves in the win. Mercyhurst ties the school record with 11 wins this season while the Bloomsburg Huskies fall to 7-6.

The Huskies got on the board first off of a goal from Kelsey Quigley off of a pass from Mary Chirichella at the 26:04 mark. Mercyhurst would outscore Bloomsburg 6-3 over the next 17 minutes and started with a 3-0 run with goals from Haggerty, Masterton, and freshman Ashley Dulaney. The Huskies would then match Mercyhurst with three goals of their own before Lakers Masterton, Dulaney, and Courtney Olevnik added the final Mercyhurst tallies before half. The Lakers went into halftime leading 6-5.

Bloomsburg put up two quick goals coming out of halftime to take a 7-6 lead. There would be a ten minute drought before Masterton would tie the game back up at 15:58 off of an unassisted goal. Once again though, the Huskies got back on top when Sam Alexander hit a streaking Kylie Mathews for an 8-7 advantage. All-American candidate Haggerty would have the last word though with back-to-back goals in the final eight minutes to secure the victory for the Lakers.

Haggerty contributed three goals and one assist in the game. Besides the three goals from Masterton, Ashley Delaney tallied two goals and Olenvik scored one. Jessie Horeth, Elizabeth Tice, and Meghan Dwyer all dished out one assist in the contest. Maggie Yackel led the defense with six caused turnovers and three groundballs.

Mercyhurst will now have nine days off before traveling to Slippery Rock on April 28. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
