Breanna Haggerty Named Division II/Nike Player of the Week

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst College junior attacker Breanna Haggerty has been named Division II/Nike Player of the Week. Haggerty is the first women's lacrosse player in program history to garner the award. She leads the country in both goals scored (48) and goals per game (4.8), ranking second in points (63) and points per game average (6.3). Haggerty had nine goals in the team's 18-3 win over No. 9 Queens and then added three more in victories over Indiana (Pa.) and No. 10 Pfeiffer. She added a career-high seven assists in the win over IUP. In a critical 12-11 victory over Belmont Abbey, Haggerty had four goals, including the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining. As a captain, Haggerty has played her best against ranked teams. She has 21 goals in four games against teams ranked in the top 10. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst is ranked No. 8 in the country and surpassed its school record and, at 8-2 on the year, has its best record through 10 games in the 12-year history of the program. Haggerty broke the school's career record in goals this year and currently has 143 to go with 63 career assists, fourth most in program history. She has scored at least three goals in 18 consecutive games and has scored at least one goal in 35 straight and 37-of-39 games for her career. Prior to the 2008 season, Haggerty was named as one of 44 women's lacrosse players on the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, presented annually to the top male and female lacrosse players at any level. The Tewaaraton Trophy, which is the lacrosse version of the Heisman Trophy, is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top male and female varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Haggerty is listed alongside players at all three NCAA levels. |
