Grand Valley Pitching Shuts Down Laker Bats
March 29, 2008 Allendale, Mich. - The Mercyhurst College softball team recorded just four hits in two games as Grand Valley State swept the Lakers 9-0 and 4-0 Saturday. The games were the GLIAC openers for Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst went hitless in the opening game as Grand Valley pitcher Lori Andjelich struck out four hitters and faced just 16 batters over five innings. Grand Valley scored one in the first, three in the second and blew the game open with a five-run third. Game two had much more drama as Mercyhurst pitcher Carrina Crow kept Grand Valley off the scoreboard for the first five innings. Crow struck out four consecutive batters early, including three in a row in the second, and finished with eight strikeouts for the contest. With the game scoreless in the sixth, Grand Valley State's Kristin Moleski hit a two-out solo homer to make it 1-0. Grand Valley put the game away with three in the seventh. Jessica McNurlen led Mercyhurst by going 2-for-3 in game two. Michelle Schmitz and Kara Gorgos each added a hit for the Lakers. Grand Valley State improves to 17-6 on the year and 2-0 in GLIAC play, while Mercyhurst falls to 11-11 and 0-2 in conference. The Lakers will play the second set of back-to-back doubleheaders Sunday at Ferris State beginning at 1 p.m. |
