April 3, 2008

Box Score

Tiffin, Ohio - The Mercyhurst softball team banged out 15 hits and pitcher Carrina Crow won her seventh game of the season as the Laker softball team defeated Tiffin 9-0 in game one Thursday. Tiffin bounced back to win game two 11-3 and earn a split of the non-conference doubleheader.

Crow allowed just two hits and one walk, striking out three batters, over five innings as the Lakers jumped out on top early and never looked back.

Amber Rapose drove in two runs with a first inning single, Michelle Schmitz added an RBI ground out and Kara Gorgos drove in the final run of the first inning with a two-out double as Mercyhurst led 4-0 after one. The Lakers added three more runs in the second as Jessica McNurlen had an RBI single and Megan Houston followed with a two-RBI single to make it 7-0.

McNurlen led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on Houston's RBI ground out to add an insurance run. The Lakers closed the scoring in the fifth as Amber Cervantez had a pinch hit RBI single to make it 9-0.

Nine different players had at least one hit for Mercyhurst in the win and McNurlen went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Erin Ratajczak, Houston, Gorgos, and Anna Glomb each had two hits.

In game two, Tiffin scored 11 runs on just six hits and was helped by five Mercyhurst errors. The Dragons put the game away early with a seven-run first inning. The Lakers got two runs back in the third as McNurlen and Rapose picked up RBI's in the frame but Tiffin posted four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Danielle Zubek added an RBI single in the fourth for the final run of the game.

Gorgos and Zubek each went 2-for-2 in the second game.

Tiffin moves to 13-6 with the split and Mercyhurst is now 13-15. The Lakers host GLIAC opponent Findlay Saturday at 1 p.m.
