Lakers Split With GLIAC-Leading Wayne State
April 20, 2008
Game 1 Box Score
Detroit, Mich. - The Mercyhurst softball team handed defending GLIAC Player of the Year Molly Yetman a rare loss on the mound and the Lakers split a doubleheader with the team at the top of the GLIAC standings, Wayne State, Sunday. Mercyhurst picked up a critical 3-1 win in the opener before losing game two 7-0. Entering the day tied for seventh in the GLIAC standings, the Mercyhurst coaching staff knew that a win would go a long way in getting the Lakers into the eight-team GLIAC Tournament. And Mercyhurst got that victory by scoring twice in the seventh inning off of Yetman to break a 1-1 tie. Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Amber Rapose walked to lead off the second inning. She moved to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts and Danielle Zubek drove her home with a single to left field. Lindsey Perry's third inning solo homer tied the score at 1-1 and it remained that way until the seventh. In the top of that inning, Annie Dragolich and Kara Gorgos had back-to-back one out bunt singles and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Yetman then threw a pair of wild pitches that allowed both runners to score. Yetman entered the contest with a record of 20-3 on the year, but she was outpitched by Mercyhurst freshman Amanda Norman. Norman went all seven innings for the win, scattering eight hits and two walks. In game two, Mercyhurst fell behind early and could never recover. Wayne State scored twice in the top of the first, added two more runs in the third and put up solo runs in each of the final three innings. Elizabeth Maier went 3-for-3 in the game but the Lakers were unable to push across any runs despite seven hits. Wayne State moves to 27-12 and 14-2 in GLIAC play. Mercyhurst is now 19-25 overall and 6-10 in the conference. The Lakers will host Seton Hill Wednesday at 3 p.m. before closing out GLIAC play by hosting Northwood and Saginaw Valley State over the weekend. |
