Lakers Dominate Griffins

April 23, 2008

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Amber Rapose went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in game one and Carrina Crow threw a three-hitter in game two as the Mercyhurst softball team swept Seton Hill in a non-conference doubleheader 12-4 and 3-1 Wednesday.

Mercyhurst scored a season-high 12 runs and tied its season-high with 14 hits as the Lakers cruised to a game one victory. The middle of Mercyhurst's lineup did most of the damage as Megan Houston, Rapose, and Michelle Schmitz went 8-for-12 with six runs and four RBI.

The Lakers scored four runs in the second as Erica Beidler drove home two with a pinch-hit single and Kara Gorgos drove in a pair as well with a double. After Tiffin battled back with three runs in the top of the third, Mercyhurst pushed across one in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch and put the contest away with four runs in the fourth, the big blast coming on a three-run homer from Rapose.

Mercyhurst finished out the contest with a three-run sixth highlighted by a Danielle Zubek two-RBI single.

In game two, Crow was dominant on the mound, allowing just three hits and no walks, while striking out seven batters in seven innings. She baffled the Griffin batters except for a sixth-inning solo homer by Sarah Tollison.

Mercyhurst scratched out just five hits but was helped by Seton Hill errors. Elizabeth Maier reached on an error in the third and eventually scored on a wild pitch. She did the same again in the fifth and eventually scored on Gorgos' RBI single. After Tollison's homer cut the deficit to just one run, Jessica McNurlen led off the sixth with a single but the Seton Hill centerfielder misplayed the ball and allowed her to come all the way around to score.

Seton Hill falls to 12-34 after the losses and Mercyhurst improves to 21-25. The Lakers host two GLIAC doubleheaders to complete the regular season this weekend. Mercyhurst hosts Northwood Friday at 3 p.m. and Saginaw Valley State Saturday at 1 p.m.
